FAQs
Frequently asked questions.
Everything people usually ask us about driveways, patios, gardens and groundworks. If yours isn't here, just ask.
General
How much does a new driveway cost?
It depends on the size, the surface and how much needs digging out. As a guide, most two-car resin or tarmac driveways in Greater Manchester come in between £4,000 and £8,000. Try our cost calculator for a ballpark, then we'll give you a fixed written quote after a free site visit.
Do you charge for quotes?
No. Site visits and written quotes are free and there's no obligation.
How long does a driveway take?
Most driveways take 3 to 6 working days from dig-out to finish, depending on size and weather. Gardens usually take 1 to 3 weeks.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Not if it's permeable, like resin bound, or if water drains into a lawn or border within your property. A non-permeable surface over 5m² draining onto the road needs permission. Dropped kerbs are a separate council application. We'll advise at the site visit.
Will you take away the old driveway?
Yes. Dig-out, waste removal and disposal are included in every new-base quote.
Do you work in winter?
Yes, for groundworks, drainage, block paving and tarmac. Resin needs dry weather above about 5°C, so we plan resin jobs around the forecast.
Which areas do you cover?
We're based in Stockport and cover Greater Manchester, north Cheshire and the High Peak, including Manchester, Sale, Oldham, Cheadle, Bramhall and Whaley Bridge.
Are you insured?
Yes, we carry full public liability insurance. Certificates are available on request.
Resin bound driveways
Can you lay resin over my existing driveway?
Sometimes. If your tarmac or concrete is sound, level and drains well we can overlay it, which saves cost. If it's cracked, sunken or block paving, we dig it out and build a new base. We'll tell you honestly at the site visit.
Is resin bound slippery?
No. The aggregate gives it a textured, grippy surface. We can also add an anti-slip glass grit to the top coat on slopes and steps.
Do I need planning permission?
Not usually. Resin bound is permeable, so it meets the rules for front gardens without needing planning permission for drainage. A new dropped kerb is a separate application to the council.
How long before I can drive on it?
You can walk on it after about 6 hours and drive on it after 24–48 hours, depending on the weather.
Tarmac driveways
Is tarmac cheaper than resin?
Usually, yes. Tarmac is one of the most cost-effective hard surfaces, especially for larger areas and private roads. Resin costs more but is permeable and comes in more colours.
Does tarmac need drainage?
Yes. Tarmac is non-permeable, so for front gardens over 5m² we design falls into a soakaway, rain garden or channel drain to keep it within the rules.
What's the block border for?
It locks the edge of the tarmac so it can't crumble, and it frames the driveway. The Sale job used Tobermore Tegula in Bracken, which softens the black tarmac nicely.
Block paving
Do block paving driveways get weeds?
They can between the joints over time. A good compaction, kiln-dried sand and a sealer keep weeds to a minimum, and a jet-wash and re-sand every few years keeps it looking new.
Can you mix block paving with resin?
Yes, and it looks great. A block border around a resin driveway is one of our most popular finishes.
Patios & paving
Porcelain or sandstone?
Porcelain is very low maintenance and doesn't stain. Sandstone is natural and warmer underfoot but needs sealing. We'll bring samples to the site visit.
Can a patio be resin bound?
Yes. Resin makes a seamless, permeable and slip-resistant patio, and it works well with block borders and steps.
Landscaping & gardens
Do you design the garden too?
Yes. We'll walk the garden with you, sketch out a plan and price it. You don't need a designer first.
Can you lay artificial grass?
Yes, on a properly excavated and compacted base with a weed membrane, so it stays flat and drains well.
Fencing & garden walls
Is composite fencing worth it?
If you don't want to paint or stain a fence again, yes. It costs more up front but lasts longer and stays the same colour.
Drainage
My driveway puddles. Can you fix it without relaying?
Often, yes. A channel drain at the low point, connected to a soakaway or existing drain, can solve it. If the levels are badly wrong we'll explain the options.
Groundworks & commercial
Do you work for developers?
Yes. We take on external works and groundwork packages for new builds and refurbishments, as well as commercial surfacing contracts.
